Upcoming Youth Summit: raising our own funds
Ghana YMCA is planning on sending four representatives to the upcoming Youth Summit in Ethiopia. During our recent Annual Youth Congress

Ghana YMCA is planning on sending four representatives to the upcoming Youth Summit in Ethiopia. During our recent Annual Youth Congress (see ‘Ghana YMCA youth taking the lead on civic competence in the country’), we received phenomenal training on civic competence – which the Summit focuses on, using the Subject to Citizen model. Under the theme ‘Building Civic Competence of the Youth: A Prerequisite for Societal Transformation’, attended by 160 delegates, the Ghana YMCA formally adopted the civic competence programme as our core youth work focus.

The Ghanian delegates are expected to champion or drive the implementation of civic competence programming and activities when they return from the Youth Summit, to be held in Addis Ababa from 28 October to 5 November 2009.

One of the major challenges for our YMCA national movements participating in the Youth Summit is to pay for return flight fares and other incidental expenses. We have thus challenged ourselves to raise our own funds to support the Ghana YMCA. Make no mistake, this is a tall order, but we are committing effort to raise funds. We proved that we could do this recently when we raised three quarters of the funds for the Ghana Annual Youth Congress – something that had not been done before.

Our South African delegates have a timely story to share on this initiative which serves as a challenge for the rest of us (see ‘African youth mobilising resources for YMCA Youth Summit’). I believe each delegate can raise a percentage of the air fare and other incidentals, if not the entire amount. We all need to take a closer look at possible fundraising areas and we will discover it is possible.

The Youth Summit has a lot in store for us and we simply cannot afford to miss out. See you all in Ethiopia...
