“Brighten the darkness that has engulfed the Christian community” – Elder Amos Annan said. Ghanaian youth have been urged not to make a mistake by thinking that throwing away their African identity and traditional Christian values for western culture will help accelerate the development of their country. The notion he said, will rather cause their doom.

Delivering the keynote address at the first ever Christian Youth Breakfast Meeting organized by the Youth Committee of the Greater Accra YMCA in Accra, the Deputy Youth Director of the Church of Pentecost Ghana and CEO of Youth Matters Group, Elder Amos Kelvin Annan appealed to the Christian Youth to be the light that will brighten the darkness that has engulfed the Christian community.

Elder Annan suggested ways that the youth can make themselves relevant to their respective societies. He urged the youth to learn from role models through skills acquisition and confidence building. This he said could be achieved by looking up to celebrities, adults and statesmen. He disclosed that as future leaders, the youth have a greater responsibility by spearheading the attitudinal change all Ghanaians are yearning for. That change Elder Annan said must start from home.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Greater Accra Regional Youth Chair, Reginald Ffoulkes Crabbe charged the Christian youth to champion the cause of the country by living up to their civic responsibilities to reverse the negative activities which are permeating the very fabric of our society. According to him, Christians dissociate themselves from politics for reasons best attributed to their belief, and that, the question still remains if the Holy Book is against it. Personally, he said Christian have a highly defined role to play in nation building. And this he said can best be achieved through governance. Mention was made of Moses and others whose models of leadership have been exemplified in the Bible.

He remarked that since the youth form the bulk of the population and are the leaders today and tomorrow, they should put their youthful energies to useful purposes in nation building.

Mr. Crabbe appealed to the Christian youth to come together to create a common platform to share Christian values that will promote their spiritual and physical growth to the Glory of God.

The overall objective of the meeting was to forge closer links between young Christian leaders from different Christian and voluntary organizations so as to provide a platform for the youth to contribute to the spiritual, economic, social and political growth of Ghana towards the achievement of good governance and consequently the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The meeting which attracted over 50 participants from all the vibrant local branches of the YMCA in Greater Accra, also attracted sister organizations like YWCA, Girl Guides, Ghana Scout Association and, some Churches. The theme for the occasion was “The Christian Youth Today and Tomorrow”. Present at the meeting were a human rights activist, the International Director of the International Centre of Conflicts and Human Rights Analysis, Mr. Sammy Jacobs Abbey and some national and regional officers including Mr. Kofi Amoah Awuah, National Vice Chairman, Mr. Prosper Hoeyi, the newly appointed Deputy National General Secretary, Mr. S. A. L Crabbe, Regional President, Mr. Charles Habiah, Regional Chairman and Mr. Kwabena Nketia Addae, the Development Secretary and Acting Regional Secretary.
