Exactly 2 days after this year’s commemoration of the UN International Youth Day on Climate Change, the youth have been charged with a responsibility of protecting the environment, one of the cheapest ways of saving our world from the devastating effects of global warming. “What affects the world today will tell of how it becomes tomorrow ….”
Speaking at the 5th Annual National Youth Convention of the Ghana YMCA held at the Opoku Ware Senior High School in Kumasi, the Assistant Director of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Mr. Richard Blevi said, the youth have a typical role to play in the global fight against Global Warming. According to him, the negative outcomes of global warming affect agriculture and food security and also, the psychological and socio-economic fabric of society.
Mr. Richard Blevi urged the youth to help in the conservation and preservation of energy and the environment respectively as he said will largely contribute in curbing to some extent, the devastating effect of global warming on the world at large.
In a statement made by the President of the National Youth Committee of the Ghana YMCA, Mr. Augustine Sarkwah cautioned the youth to refrain from activities that destroy our environment. He also advised the youth to be mindful about their conduct especially before, during and after the 2008 Presidential and Parliamentary Election.
The 3 day convention which was themed on “saving our world from the destructive effects of global warming, the role of the youth” was well attended by YMCA youth from across the country and representatives of sister organizations such as YWCA, PPAG and the EPA which took centre stage of the 3 day event. It was marked with various interesting activities which exposed participants to the causes and effects of global warming.
