Hi-Tech Youth Training Centre to be Established in Accra

The vision of the African YMCAs to empower the youth for the African renaissance has been given a boost with the signing of a preliminary agreement between the Fuhrlaender Company of Germany, Ghana YMCA, CVJM and the African Alliance of YMCAs to establish a hi-tech training centre in Accra with sub-centres in Takoradi and Apedwa all in Ghana.

The state-of-the-art centre once completed is expected to train young people from all over Africa and offer opportunities for the students to undertake industrial attachments with the Fuhrlaender Company in Germany.

Designed to be an international training centre, it is expected to attract teachers from all over Africa and beyond and offer opportunities for young people from Germany to offer their skills as well as gain the necessary exposure through exchange visits.

The partnership which started as a small but beautiful relationship between the Ghana YMCA and the Fuhrlaender Company to provide technical and vocational skills to the youth has reached a climax with the signing of a € 2.5 million agreement involving the Fuhrlaender Company, Ghana YMCA, African Alliance and the CVJM as separate parties for the establishment of the hi-tech training centre which is to be replicated to other parts of Africa with time.

Appending his signature to the initial agreement Mr. Joachim Fuhrlaender, CEO of the Fuhrlaender Company said his passion to see that the economic empowerment of the youth in Africa become a reality drives him to enter this agreement with the YMCA which is a youth-oriented organization.

He said he shares in the YMCA’s vision to empower the youth for the African renaissance and it is for this reason that he has committed his company to enter this joint venture to establish a world-class training centre in Accra to provide the young people of Africa with employable skills that will make them truly global citizens to give economic meaning to the “from subject to citizen” (S2C) concept of the African Alliance of YMCAs.

He said the initial €2.5 million to be provided by his company should be considered as seed money which has to be nurtured to grow so that the centre will be self-sustaining over time. The centre is expected to offer training in various courses including new ones such as mechatronics, energy generation and hospitality management.

The Fuhrlaender Company is into renewable energy with specific emphasis on wind energy and operates in about 13 countries across the globe. As part of its corporate social responsibility it has provided similar training opportunities for young people in other countries such as Vietnam and Brazil.

All parties in this agreement are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to developing the youth in this special way and are more than prepared to get this project off the ground from October this year.

Men Changing Men
The system of male domination is no new thing in our world today, but the danger is that we as young men do not question it as we are born and socialised into it without being exposed to a masculinity option that does not dominate or harm.
